Pressure ulcers are areas of localized damage to the skin and underlying tissue, which impose a major burden to patients and medical systems. Although ADSCs and PRP are therapeutically effective, they stay in the body for a short time. Natural polymer hydrogels are multifunctional and are the most attractive in promoting the healing of chronic wounds. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new method to prepare controlled-release hydrogels of ADSCs and PRP to achieve the best therapeutic effect.

Recently, three professors from the Translational Medicine Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Jinan University, and the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, they developed adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) loaded hydrogel system based on methacrylate gelatin (GelMA) and methacrylated silk fibroin (SFMA) as cell and growth factors delivery vehicles for the treatment of pressure ulcers. Overall, this results suggest that GelMA/SFMA/ PRP/ADSCs hydrogel with the sustainable release ability of ADSCs and PRP will possess great potential for promoting the chronic wound healing, especially in pressure ulcers skin.
